OmmWriter (Free Trial, Windows/Mac)
Probably the most well known distraction-free program where you can change backgrounds, add music and have have calming sound effects.
Zen Writer (Free Trial, Windows)
Similar to OmmWriter, Windows only.
Focus Writer (Free with Optional Donation, Windows/Mac)
This one’s actually free and works on a range of platforms. There’s also simple features like autosave and timers.
Q10 (Free, Windows)
Full screen, basically nothing but text. There’s no menu bar and everything is accessed though keyboard shortcuts.
White Room ($9.99, Mac)
Basically Q10 with a few extra features but is not free and only works for Macs.
Write Monkey (Free, Windows)
Again the typewriter like simplicity but it also supports Markdown which is useful for
Stay Focusd (Free, Chrome Plugin)
You can block access to specific sites for a set duration or during certain hours. Leechblock is the Firefox alternative.
Self Control (Free, Mac)
You set a time, you set up a blacklist of sites you want to avoid and once it starts, it won’t stop until your time is up (even if you delete the app or restart your computer).
Cold Turkey ($10, Windows)
Because I couldn’t find a proper free version for Windows.
ILYS (Free, Web App)
You set out a word total target and you start writing. As you start writing, you’ll only be able to see one letter at a time and you cannot change, edit or backspace anything until you’ve reached your limit.
Scrawl (Free, Web App)
You set a time that you want to be be distraction free. And then you set a “maximum pause time”. When you reach that time and lose concentration, it’ll make screaming noises at you.
Write or Die 2 (Free Web App, $20 Desktop for Windows/Mac)
Probably the best one that really gets you writing. There are different settings and levels but most importantly is the “Consequence Mode”. You have to write to avoid the annoying sounds and the images of spiders and creepy insects. The “Kamikaze” mode is the most extreme so when you stop writing, you’re work starts getting deleted.
Coffitivity (Free)
Replicates the coffee shop atmosphere which is strangely calming.
Soundrown (Free)
If coffee shop noise doesn’t suit you, here’s a site with a selection including: rain, waves, birds, white noise and more.
Focus Booster App (Free)
Using the pomodoro technique to help make timing for projects more efficient and help production.
Wunderlist (Free)
Basic, simple, easy to sync over multiple devices to-do list.
